Entertainment Design: Traditional or Digital?

by Chris Lie and Luis Lasahido

Entertainment Design as a new field in the design industry is on the rise due to the popularity of video games, animation, and blockbuster Hollywood movies. The high requirement in the industry had forced concept designers to experiment and discover new, better and faster working methods to produce designs with constant creativity and productivity. The transition from traditional to digital production methods is faster and unavoidable. The seminar will discuss, compare, and demonstrate both methods in various production stages.

Chris Lie has been working on various comic books, cover art, toys design and concept art since finishing up his master’s degree in Sequential Art from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005. Some highlights of his works are GI Joe Sigma6 comic and toys, character design for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 video game, Magic the Gathering Tactics CCG, and the inside cover of Street Fighter IV XBOX360 game. Recently, his graphic novel, Return to Labyrinth volume 3 is at # 4 at the New York Times manga bestseller list.

Luis Lasahido started his art journey while he was in college, studying water color. His training in traditional painting had made his transition to digital media effortless. Since then, his sleek and detailed painting style has appeared on various comic pages, covers, TCGs and CCGs. Some of his favorite projects are Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 design, Magic The Gathering Tactics, Spartacus cover, and Don Lawerence’ Storm album. His artworks are also featured in Exotique and Expose series.

EACOMM Corporation was part of the Animation Council of the Philippines‘ delegation to the Third China International Animation Copyright Fair held in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, China from September 27 – October 5, 2011.

The third of its kind in the city, the fair will have 1,300 booths with more than 200 exhibitors from the local and overseas animation industry showcasing their work on more than 70,000 sq m of space. Major companies participating include US-based media company Disney and Japanese player Bandai, as well as Guangzhou-based Creative Power Entertaining Co, the company behind the popular Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf Chinese TV animation series. “The fair offers a great platform for the animation industry and many opportunities for businesses to network. The forums during the event will also see many experts in the field giving their take on the future of the industry. One of the major issues we will be looking at is the need to push the Chinese brand forward, new growth models and the challenges of new media,” said Yan Xiaokang, Dongguan vice-mayor, and deputy head of the fair’s organizing committee, during a press conference before the start of the event. Dongguan is home to more than 1,000 animation-related enterprises.

Android Software Development

EACOMM has seen tremendous progress in developing business and educational apps for the Android operating system in the short span of time that we’ve dedicated resources in developing this skill set. EACOMM has managed to leverage its over ten years of experience in web, software and multimedia development as well as its seven years of experience in developing Content Management Systems in developing interactive android applications that can be managed and edited on-line. Here are just some of the projects we’ve been doing in the past few months:

Tablet Content Management Systems – We are aggressively redesigning our DO-CMS business website management system to cater to Android Tablets and smart phones. Applications of this CMS includes Android-based e-books and magazines, e-learning tools, market research tools and business management applications. Two-way communications allow for the android tablet to be used for remote data gathering while processing and report generation are done in the cloud.

Location Awareness – The majority of Android tablets and smart phones are equipped with Global Positions Systems or GPS. This provides EACOMM with the opportunity to develop a variety of location-aware applications that can be used in the fields of fleet/vehicle tracking and management, inventory/shipment tracking, market and political research and surveys, tourism and more.

Interactive MultimediaEACOMM is the premier provider of DVD/CD PC-based interactive multimedia applications in the Philippines. It would be a shame if we do not leverage our market leadership into this new and exciting platform of tablet computing. As such, we are excited to offer interactive multimedia e-books, learning tools, games, and corporate presentations for the Android platform.

For more information regarding our Android programming efforts or if you are interested to have us develop an Android app for your organization please email us at: solutions@eacomm.com.

We are also on the look out for Java developers interested to focus on Android software development. Please send your resumes to admin@eacomm.com so that we can invite you for an interview.

SQL Optimization

SQL or Structured Query Language has been the standard protocol of most Relational Database Systems of the past decades. It runs the backbone of practically the whole Internet as all the major database systems (Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL, etc…) utilizes it. As such it is a critical language to know for web programmers. A very basic knowledge of SQL can help even the most novice programmer to start developing simple web or software applications such as Blogs, Web Stores, Dynamic Websites and others. With the large computing power available to us even in the simplest web hosting servers, it is oftentimes neglected that our Database design and queries are optimized for the fastest possible performance. However, when we are dealing with tens of thousands of website visitors or hundreds of thousands of database entries, SQL optimization is a must. The following presentation discusses simple SQL optimization techniques that can greatly improve your software or web application’s performance.

Growth spurt in mobile Internet

Over 35% of Filipino Internet users adopt mobile Internet

A growth spurt in mobile Internet use in South East Asia (SEA) resulted in an over 35% of Filipino Internet users to adopt mobile Internet- placing Philippines third in SEA for mobile use. Compared to March 2011, mobile Internet use among Filipinos increased by over 48% in April 2011.

Effective Measure Regional Director (SEA) Russell Conrad credits this growth to the increasing popularity of Smartphones, “Along with the boom of Smartphones throughout the region, a growing number of consumers, including over half a million Filipino Internet users, are adopting mobile Internet to access infotainment, conduct business and engage in e-commerce while on the go.

Comparison of the increase in mobile Internet use in SEA from March to April 2011:

The following details the browsing patterns of Filipino mobile Internet users in April 2011:

  • Mobile Internet users stayed on a webpage at an average of 51 seconds, 22 seconds more than PC users
  • Each session on mobile Internet lasted for at an average of 5.42 minutes, 34 seconds more than a PC session
  • Mobile internet users viewed an average of 7 pages per session, 4 pages less than PC users

“The progress of the Philippines market is deeply encouraging. The increased activity seen on mobile Internet provides an opportunity for businesses to target the Philippines market and establish mobile-friendly interfaces to strengthen an online presence,” said Conrad.

Social Network Integration

Wikipedia defines social networking service as “…an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, e.g., who share interests and/or activities”. Some popular social networking service sites are facebook and twitter.

The world has gone social. The primary evidence is when you log in to your facebook account and see how many of your friends are online. More and more people are getting online every day and make it as part of their daily life.  They engage with each other, playing games, sharing activities, interests, and/or passions with their network of friends. They discover meaningful contents for them and join conversations. The activity and authenticity of the social network is made up of real people – and these people could be your customers.

That is one reason why it is beneficial for businesses to integrate social networks, such as facebook and twitter, to their websites. Once a user like, recommend or tweet your website, it will be shared to their network of friends and this personal recommendation is a powerful kind of endorsement. Your website will have more opportunity to be visited that offers your products and/or services to be known to customers.

Ever wonder how many people can find your facebook page or tweets? According to Wikipedia, facebook now has over 600 million active users all over the world while twitter has 200 million (as of January 2011). It’s now time for your business to join these social networking sites to keep in touch of your customers and get the edge by integrating it to your website.

There are many ways of integrating these social networking sites to your website or web applications. Social networking sites provide Widgets, APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and SDKs (Software Development Kits) or devkits which Software Developers can use to create custom applications or integration supported by their platform. For example, Facebook has the “Graph API” that enables us to read and write data to Facebook. We can now retrieve data like photos, events, likes, update statuses and other data objects. They also provide SDKs for certain programming languages like Facebook PHP SDK that provide Facebook Platform support for PHP-based web applications. Other Facebook SDK include Android SDK, .NET SDK, etc.

Blast from the Past…Part 1: EACOMM Presentations

EACOMM Corporation is celebrating its 10th year anniversary this year and we thought we’d bring back to light some of our past works, projects and presentations. To start, below are some power-point presentations we’ve presented over the years in PDF format:

Building a Web-Based Marketing Channel – This presentation was shown in 2005 to groups of Filipino Export Companies in the hopes of convincing them to market their products online. It discusses basic on-line marketing, developing an effective website, and an introduction to e-commerce.

EACOMM-introduction to 3d game programming – This presentation was conducted for a organization of Ateneo Computer Science Majors in 2003. It provides a brief introduction on 3D game programming and the available technologies for development during that time.

Real-time-data-transmission-over-FM-sub-carrier-frequencies – This paper was a presentation on EACOMM Corporation’s R&D efforts in developing a data transmission system using unused bandwidth in FM Radio stations way back in 2002. This is one of our favorite research endeavors even after nine years given the novelty of the concept.

Wireless Data Transmission over GSM Short Message Service (GSM-SMS) – This R&D project aimed to provide a means of data transmission over GSM-SMS (A relatively new concept in 2003 when this system was proposed).

Innovative Applications of Asterisk Open Source PBX – This was presented in Asterconference Roadshow Manila last February 2, 2007. It discusses the potential applications of the Asterisk Opensource VoIP PBX Platform.

Introduction to CSS2 – This is a presentation EACOMM uses to brief its new web designers and developers on CSS2.0 when it was still not being thought in schools. You can download the presentation along with references and examples by downloading this file: cssworkshop.zip
